This magical story explores the world of Giants who live above the clouds. Ever since they left Earth a long time ago, the Giants have made a life up above where their job is to keep the sky beautiful. They polish the stars, poke the clouds to let it rain and paint the sunsets. But there is one curious Giant who wonders what life is like on Earth, so she steals a key to the locked up “beanstalk” and embarks on an adventure down below!

This musical was inspired by the common myth that Giants live up in clouds. We began to wonder – what it’s like up there? What do they do all day? What would happen if one giant took a big risk and came down to earth?
(We also loved the idea of seeing kids play GIANTS on stage, with trees and houses coming up to their knees 🙂
So with a slight nod to one of our favorite Sondheim songs, we began exploring.
While we had so much fun playing in this imaginary world, we wanted the central relationship of the show to be real. Something that kids could connect with.
That’s why the show focuses on the friendship between Heeshee and Bert, and how great friends are something you shouldn’t take for granted. The song “While You Can” is a wonderful reminder for all of us to show appreciation to the special people in our lives.
We hope you enjoy this refreshing story, and can’t wait to see how you and your actors bring it to life on stage.

Considerations:
Every actor (except the Elders, Farley and Bert) can be involved in each of the ensembles, with a small costume piece added to accent the different groups (Students = default costume; Hooligans = add hat; Gamers = add glasses.)
If your cast size is under 23, any of the Hooligan/Student/Gamer characters can be doubled (played by the same actors).
FARLEY, BERT, FINN & YORG have roles with the most substance and require an excellent actor and singer. Every part is gender neutral and can be played by a boy or a girl.

I have been teaching for 13 years and have done over 40 elementary shows. I usually choose from the music magazines or do Disney Jr. productions but I stumbled upon Beat by Beat Press this year, and am I ever glad I did! I am THRILLED with “Giants in the Sky” and the thing I love most is that this play doesn’t “underestimate” students’ abilities. So often I feel the shows that are created “dumb down” content they feel the “little kids” can’t handle making the songs cheezy and lines very rhyme-y. Your music from this show feels just as good to me as an expensive Broadway play. My students love singing it and I love hearing it. I adapted the show for a class of 75 6th graders and we are having the best time. I will definitely be a Beat by Beat customer for the remainder of my career!
