Far below the ocean waves
A gnarble lay in bed
All night long his gnarble dreams
Kept swimming in his head

He dreamt a dream of swimming up
To see the sky above
Lit up by the sun in colors
He just knew he’d love

But gnarbles never swam that high
Their fins were much too small
Their tails were thin and floppy
Which didn’t help at all

But this gnarble liked his fins
And had no problem with his tail
So when he woke he knew that he just
Couldn’t, wouldn’t fail

(NOBLE GNARBLE steps downstage.)

NOBLE GNARBLE
I want to swim to the top of the ocean
I want to see the sky
I’ve heard it’s bright at the top of the ocean

(GNARBLES #1-#4 enter. They see NOBLE GNARBLE.)

GNARBLE #1
Hey! We’re gonna go mudflogging…you in?

NOBLE GNARBLE
Not this time. Today, I plan to see the sky!

GNARBLE #2
Uh oh, here we go again.

GNARBLE #3
Why can’t you just be happy with what we have down here?

NOBLE GNARBLE
Don’t you get tired of only being around mud and sand and blyfish all day?

GNARBLE #3
I looooove mud. And this is where we’re meant to be.

GNARBLE #4
Yeah, just look at us. Tiny fins! Floppy tails! We belong in the dark – where no one can see us!

NOBLE GNARBLE
But I know I can make it up there.

GNARBLE #1
You know it’s never been done before, so why even try? Remember…

ALL OTHER GNARBLES
You’re just a little gnarble!

GNARBLE #2
C’mon, let’s go.

(GNARBLES #1-#4 exit.)

NOBLE GNARBLE
They just don’t understand what I see, every night when I close my eyes…

Every night I dream sunlight
Every night I dream sky
Every night I’m a gnarble swimming high
Up above where the waves are crashin’
And the water’s warm and bright
And I jump through the air and splash in
And everything feels right

Oh I want to swim to the top of the ocean
I want to see the sky
I want to flip through the top of the ocean

But everybody says “Why try?”

You’re just a little gnarble!

(BLYFISH #1-#3 enter. BLYFISH are annoying.)

NOBLE GNARBLE
Oh no, here come the blyfish.

BLYFISH #1
Hey, looky here! This little gnarble thinks he’s gonna swim up to see the sky!
(The CHORUS all become BLYFISH, softly snickering.)

BLYFISH #2
Huh, how’s he expect to do that without any flappers?

BLYFISH #3
Or koggers?

BLYFISH #1
I just don’t see it happening.

ALL BLYFISH
No gnarble’s ever swam that high
It simply isn’t done
A blyfish might just make the trip
But we know you’re not one

BLYFISH & CHORUS (as BLYFISH)
You’re just a little gnarble!

CHORUS (as NARRATORS)
But the gnarble didn’t listen
And he left his friends behind

No silly blyfish family
