Drama Game: Affect the Player

Type:  Creativity, Improv

Purpose: A useful game that will help students explore objective and tactics. Most appropriate for slightly older students.

Prep: Write a list of feelings up on the board (provided at the bottom of this post)

Procedure:

1. Divide the students into pairs (preferably random pairs.)

2. Tell the students that you will give them 5 seconds to silently choose one of the feelings from the list on the board. They should not tell their partner what they have chosen.

3. When you say “Action”, they are to try and elicit that feeling from their partner. The only restriction is they may not use recognizable words and may not touch their partner (gibberish is allowed). The students should strongly and actively pursue their objective, while allowing themselves to be affected by the actions of their partner.

5. Call “Action” and give them 60 seconds.

6. Play a few rounds, each time having them choose a new feeling from the board.

Reflection: Were you successful? Was that challenging? What tactic did you find to be most successful?

Variation: For advanced students, ask each player to choose two feelings and try to illicit both from their partner.
